HKU Students Bring “Storytelling for Social Impact” to Community
09 Jun 2025
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has been committed to nurturing students to become socially responsible leaders. Recently, the “Storytelling for Social Impact” programme organised by The Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) at HKU exemplifies this philosophy, empowering students to apply their expertise to serve the community and foster positive development in children.
“Storytelling for Social Impact”, covering four key modules: “Storytelling Techniques,” “Picture Book Appreciation,” “Story Prop Creation,” and “Interactive and Extension Activities”, aims to enhance HKU students’ storytelling skills through lecture and training workshops. The project also includes service-learning experiences in primary schools and community organisations, where HKU students engage in shared reading with children to spark their imagination and contribute to society.
Multidisciplinary Students Turn Theory into Action
Thirteen HKU students from diverse curricula such as Literature, Education, and Social Sciences leveraged their strengths to create interactive storytelling activities for over 100 children following comprehensive professional training. Andrew Wong, a Year 4 HKU student from BA&BEd-LangEd(CHIN) shared, "This programme has enabled us to transform classroom theory into practical experience, enhancing our storytelling skills, providing us with a profound understanding of the influence educators have on shaping the development of future generations.”
Professional Training for Dedicated Service
Facilitated by the Hans Andersen Club, the programme’s training encompassed children's psychology, storytelling, and more. Ms. Karen Lai, Senior Project Officer and training instructor at the Hans Andersen Club, commended HKU students for their enthusiasm and sense of responsibility, emphasising their use of picture books to foster intergenerational communication and care for children.
Cultural Integration to Broaden Perspectives
Anabella, an exchange student from the United Kingdom shared, "Through interactions with local children, I gained insights into Hong Kong's educational culture and solidified my commitment to future engagement in social services. This practical experience offers invaluable learning that transcends the classroom."
High Recognition from Community Partners
Collaborating institutions such as Chiu Sheung School Hong Kong expressed gratitude for the well-designed activities by HKU students, recognising the significant benefits their children derived from engaging in vibrant stories and creative handicrafts. Caritas Mok Cheung Sui Kun Community Centre also appreciated the dedication of HKU students.
Laurence Tang, Head of Campus Life at HKU highlighted, "University education extends beyond knowledge dissemination to nurturing a spirit of service. We are pleased to witness students contributing to society with their professional skills, embodying the core value of whole-person education at HKU."
This programme reaffirms how HKU students seamlessly integrate academic pursuits with social responsibility, representing the spirit of HKU motto: "Sapientia Et Virtus" through impactful actions in the community.
